I keep finding pictures from the famous Grape Stomps. I am sure some are repeats but there are a few here that have not been seen and probably are better forgotten.

Over the years the guild has been a strong knit social group. So as many pots have happened so have many milestones been celebrated. Irma's birthday was one of those events. Other events an luncheons one of note was held at the golf course.

Harnessing Our Past Mural

A few days ago someone came into the guild and said what have you done to the murals so we looked out the window and the Fall sunlight was hitting the mural at such an angle that it made the horses come alive and we saw the great beauty of the workmanship put into this mural. On a daily basis we see it as we walk into the building but don't take too much notice. Many groups spend a great amount of time admiring the murals as they visit and participate in the mural walks around time. These photos reflect a small part of the work and creativity that went into a timeless work of history.

The pictures show the process of making the mural from the first planning drawings through the wet clay stage, to the completed assembled pieces. At this stage the pieces are left until completely dry, then fired, reassembled and cemented in place.

Raku at Tracy's

What an amazing process a little fire, glowing hot pot or in this case fish, a little saw dust and ta da one incredible raku fish or pot. I'm not too sure of the year but from the clothing etc. it looks like it is within the last 10 years. Tracy how about doing this again.

Rebuilding the Kiln

Although these picture are in the wrong order you can see the process of rebuilding and the work that it took to have the kiln that we use today.

Alberta Summer Games 1995

The tiles were made by the children at the summer games and took all winter to fire. They were installed the following summer by guild members.

Winding Down

Our celebrations are winding down with our 35th anniversary party on Friday. I will then have pictures to post on the blog. I am sure there will be stories to be told on Friday that many of us have not heard. A few surprises are in store with some past members in town and coming to the event. So there is sure to be story swapping and some of the newer members will get the opportunity to learn more about the early days at the guild.

Included are pictures from the 2 previous anniversary celebrations.(25 and 10)

Our gallery show runs till the end of the month and we are participating in Culture Days with throwing demonstrations at the library so we will still be busy and involved. We are already starting to make decorations for our Christmas decoration project. So as one thing ends new ones are filling in their place to keep us busy.

These are some of the pictures from last Saturday. It was a very successful day and we are so thankful for everyone's work and support. So much work goes into these events but we know they are always remembered long after the event.

Things to Come

It is the middle of August the time when parents are getting their children ready for school and we are all starting to realize that summer is starting to come to a close. Alberta life at its finest. At the guild we are just starting to wined up and get ready for September with new classes and the celebration of 35 years of existence as a guild.

Profiles are being completed by individual potters to be displayed with their work for our All Fired Up After 35 Years Anniversary Show. We are in anticipation for our open house on September 10 and our party on the 23rd of September.

Members have been so kind as to lend photos and I will continue to post some of them.

I have not wanted to post too many pictures because I want them to be fresh for the Power point at the anniversary party but I have scanned many clippings and will post some of them as well as photos that will not be used. They are in no particular order but hope they are of interest.

I have been neglectful with posting, but an e-mail has gone out to members with an update. Tickets for the anniversary party on September 23 are on sale to current guild members only, until the end of July. Marian will then contact former guild members and tickets will be sold on a first come first serve basis. Space is limited so to assure a ticket try to get one early.
We are excited about the event and are planning an interesting program, good food, memorable decor, excellent company and even door prizes.
Planning for an open house on September 10 from 12-4 is already underway. An anniversary show will run all month in the gallery. So September will be full of activities and opportunities for guild members and the public as well.
Fall class registration is scheduled for September 10 at 10 in the morning.

More Parade

One way to ward off the chill.

It takes a real driver to pull a float.

Treats for the kids and coupons for the adults all with a smile.

Every float needs beauties scantly dressed too bad it was cold.

One security guard was pleased to see the float.

Not even a wobble.

Too long on the float and left to her own devices oops vices.

The float was a success and everyone enjoyed themselves and are looking forward to doing it again in the future. I has been a busy time for the guild but everyone seems to take it in their stride and just does what needs to be done with enthusiasm. What a great group of people to associate with, and to think some of those associations have existed for 35 years.

Farmers' Days

The Town of Stony Plain - Farmers' Days and Kinsmen Rodeo runs from Friday, June 3 to Sunday, June 5, 2011 at Heritage Park.

The annual event features a community parade at 11:00 a.m. on Saturday, June 4, a midway, carnival games, and a children's activity area throughout the weekend.

The Kinsmen Rodeo and the arm wrestling competition are favourite events returning this year.

To celebrate our 35th anniversary we will be entering a float in the parade. The theme is service in the community and we have a long history of serving through promoting clay in the community with our pottery education classes. We are quite excited about our float with a kick wheel and potter demonstrating throwing. We really are wondering what the pots will look like after all the stopping and starting of the quad that is pulling the float. We are confident that if anyone can throw on a moving float it is Bob Barclay, master potter. Jan Lloyd has ordered candy for the children and is making coupons for a draw of gift certificates for the gallery to be handed out to the adults. If the weather is in our favor it will be a fun time for all.

35th poster at Multicultural Gallery

Our poster and an ad for the open house are posted at the Multicultural Centre Gallery. The lighting was not good in the hallway but you can notice the poster on the right side of the hall.

We are entering the Farmers Day Parade and plan to have the old kick wheel on the float. We will be celebrating our 35 years of promoting clay in the community. We will be handing out candy with coupons for a draw that will take place at our open house in September. When you start a project you think there is alot of time but time is getting short as we get closer to the event.

Our poster will be shown at the Multicultural Centre Public Art Gallery if only in a smaller version at the Fourth Biennial Exhibition Of Parkland Potter's Guild "The Best of the Best "Show running May 14 to June 8, 2011. You are invited to the opening reception Sunday May 15, 1 to 3:30 p.m.

The banner for the 35th is finished and is hanging in the gallery right now. We will use the image on our promotional posters. It was fun to watch the long time members of the guild remembering past projects and trying to figure our who was who in some of the older pictures. Planning Meeting and Smoke and Fire

It seems where the is smoke and fire you will find a group of potters. I have managed to scan old pictures from around the guild but am in need of pictures from the last 10 years so if you could e-mail them to me or give them to me I will scan them for the power point. Please choose only a few of the best from an event, try to get as many familiar faces in the picture and choose clear pictures.

Last Thursday we had our planning meeting for the anniversary celebration. We decided our theme would be Still Fired Up After 35 Years. We would like to involve the community in some of the celebrations (your ideas would be appreciated) but have decided that the party will be for us to celebrate our success. Bob Barkley is the master of ceremonies and is planning the program. Jen Lloyd is planning a float for the Farmer's Day Parade so let her know if you can be of help Bob wants to sit at the old kick wheel and throw pots, on he float, sounds like fun. Our next meeting will be on May 10. There will be more info about tickets at a later post but they will be $35 in keeping with the theme.

Planning Meeting

Put April 7th on your calendar. We will be having our second planning meeting that evening at the guild at 7:00 pm. If you are interested in being part of the planning committee or have good ideas to share, join us and help to make this a celebration to remember. We would like to promote the guild the whole month of September so this gives us time for a variety of events and projects. See you there.

The committee for the celebration has established the date for the guild member event to be on September 23 in the evening at KC’s Caverna 4600 48th Street Stony Plain, AB. The venue can accommodate 100 people and spouses are invited. Tickets and price will be available at a later date but keep this evening open on your calendars. There will be an open house and promotional events in the guild and gallery in the month of September. Read your minutes from the meeting to find out about some promotional ideas discussed at the meeting. The committee is excited about this celebration and welcomes your help and input. We do a wonderful job in the community and this is our time to shine.

This blog's purpose is to inform you of the progress that is being made for the preparation of the 35th Anniversary Celebration for the Parkland Potter’s Guild in Stony Plain Alberta. I hope to make this an on going active part of our guild; to keep everyone informed about weekly happenings, promotions, artists, events and even the occasional recipe. It is my hope that we may be able to share with others the uniqueness that can only be found in a guild that has been successfully operating for 35 years.
